Kendal at Lexington’s Borden Health Center Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Lexington, VA – As the only non-for-profit skilled nursing center in the area, Kendal at Lexington’s Borden Center serves a unique role within the community. Since opening in 2002, the center has provided the highest quality of long-term care and short-term rehabilitation services to a wide range of older adults, including those on Medicaid.

Kendal at Lexington opened the Benjamin Borden Health Center in September 2002 after recognizing the need for a skilled nursing facility within the greater Lexington/Rockbridge area. The demand for skilled care grew following Stonewall Jackson Hospital’s decision to close its Extended Care Facility.  Administrators at Stonewall Jackson and Kendal worked collaboratively to transition residents and services to the Borden Center.

Instead of using a traditional clinical model of care, the Borden Center’s staff uses a person-centered approach to resident care. Coordinated health services are based upon each individual’s preferences and needs, which maximizes the residents’ quality of life and independence.

The Borden Center has served over 950 individuals since 2002; 90% of whom come from Lexington, Rockbridge County and surrounding communities. “At any given time, approximately 1/3rd of the Borden Center’s residents are Medicaid recipients,” explains Charlotte Sibold, Assistant Administrator of Kendal at Lexington. “As a not-for-profit organization, we’re proud to offer our services to a broad range of older adults. This reflects the Kendal System’s values of social responsibility and giving back to the community.”

The Borden Center has the capacity to serve up to sixty individuals. The center offers long-term care as well as short-term skilled rehabilitation services on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Dementia care and respite services are also provided. The Borden Center employs 53 of Kendal at Lexington’s 138 staff members.

Residents, family members, staff and administration celebrated the Borden Center’s 10th anniversary with music and refreshments on September 27, 2012.
