November 4, 2022 —Comparing amenities, prices, locations, contract types, the care offered, and styles of independent living residences amongst Life Plan Communities (also known as CCRCs) can be daunting.
The Kendal at Lexington marketing team helps make it enjoyable with our Experience Us/Try It program. By providing complimentary lodging at our historic Sunnyside guest house for one or two nights, and complimentary meals (in the KaLex dining room or downtown Lexington) hosted by residents, Kendal at Lexington allows prospective residents to get a feel for the community. While here, prospective resident guests will meet and tour with the marketing team and can participate in activities and amenities.

Love at First (and Fourth) Experience
Doreen says she’ll never forget that first time she drove into the Lexington, Virginia, Kendal campus. “Coming over the hills – the pastureland and the mountains and the people,” said Doreen. “I just like the whole layout. It’s so different from the other places.”
Kendal at Lexington offers a variety of independent living residences, including free-standing houses, duplex houses, townhouse-style cluster cottages, and apartments in three-story buildings – allowing the surrounding Blue Ridge mountains to be the only high rise in sight.
Sharing a Meal
Having dinner with Kendal residents was a key component of Doreen’s Try-It stay. “It was wonderful meeting the people,” said Doreen. “In the beginning, I was a little bit worried because so many people had PhDs — I thought it might be too intellectual. But I never saw that. Everyone was so nice.”
On Doreen’s first Try It visit, her daughter accompanied her. Five months later, she returned for a second Try It visit with her other daughter.
She visited a third time and participated in a Kendal-sponsored wine tour. And during her fourth visit, Doreen signed a reservation agreement for a cluster cottage she would move into four months later.
Help Making Her Choice
“I was leaning toward one of the cottages on Sycamore Lane,” Doreen said. “My daughter thought I should get an apartment. The cluster cottage is in between, with the covered walkways and their proximity to the main building.”
Following a significant renovation, her cottage looked new when she moved in, and Doreen said she felt like she already had friends here the day she became a resident because of her frequent visits “and meeting people each time.”
