Turning a House into a Home

Turning a House into a Home

Karen and John moved to Kendal at Lexington (KaLex) in June of 2022 from the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina. John and Karen brought inspiration from their time in Asheville into the couple’s new cottage at KaLex and worked to make the cottage fit into a home that fit their lifestyle.

What does Kendal Offer?

Kendal at Lexington has expectations and criteria to standardize a residence. From well-designed studio apartments to two-bedroom with den cottages—and everything in between—residents have a wide range of choices to help them find the place they can call home.

The beautiful campus, within walking distance from historic downtown Lexington, also offers all-inclusive wellness and healthcare choices to enhance your sense of freedom and security in retirement. Residents enjoy delicious meals, residential services, wellness programs, a fitness center and onsite healthcare for life.

The space you choose at Kendal is your home. We want it to fit your lifestyle.

My Options?

Homes range from 550 to more than 2,000 square feet. All have full-sized kitchens and laundry appliances, and either a balcony, patio or sunroom. And all have access to convenient parking, including some carports and many free-standing cottages with garages.

John and Karen’s Sycamore Home

When you walk into John and Karen’s home on Sycamore, one of the first things you will notice is the wonderfully unique, tiled, natural gas fireplace. The couple enjoys plenty of space, and they worked with an independent woodworker to design display shelving on either side to show off some artwork that is most special to them. The couple enjoys a living room that flows into a showpiece of a kitchen. The kitchen cabinets and counters were designed to complement a mobile island that John made before coming to Kendal. The beautiful natural maple-colored cabinets with a shine of a clear finish and a cosmic black granite countertop provide a modern take on a classic style.

Their design carries into their two large bedrooms and two bathrooms. The bathrooms are personalized with new vanities and subway-tiled showers with a natural slate highlight. Lastly, maximizing space, John and Karen opted to add a built-in bookshelf in an otherwise unused corner. This bookcase adds lots of storage. It also creates an elegant design for the room. This timeless design is unmatched.

“Our new home is a great fit for us.”, says John. “We appreciate the design of both the home and campus, and the convenience of being able to walk to both on-campus and in-town destinations.”
