As Kendal at Lexington’s interim CEO, Felicia Bush wears many hats—balancing the demands of overseeing the community while continuing her role as CFO. Her leadership is defined by pragmatism, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the mission of Kendal.

Bush’s journey to becoming interim CEO reflects her deep commitment to the organization. While stepping into this position wasn’t part of her original career plan, she willingly embraced the opportunity when asked to help during a pivotal moment. “This isn’t a role I sought out,” she admitted. “I was asked to step in, and I agreed to help out.” Her response highlights the sense of duty and dedication that has been a hallmark of her career.

A Community That Inspires

One of the most profound aspects of her experience as interim CEO has been the overwhelming support from Kendal’s residents. For Bush, this sense of community is both humbling and inspiring.
“I knew the residents were wonderful,” she said. “But the outpouring of support and offers of help have truly been remarkable. It’s one of Kendal’s greatest strengths.”

This mutual respect and camaraderie are at the heart of what makes Kendal a unique and welcoming place. “The sense of caring between residents and staff is incredible,” Bush added. “It makes coming to work a genuinely pleasant experience.”

Balancing Leadership and Self-Care

With the weight of two demanding roles, Bush is no stranger to long days filled with decisions, financial oversight, and strategic planning. To stay grounded, she turns to activities that help her recharge.
“My job is so sedentary that getting moving makes all the difference,” she explained. “I enjoy walking or biking outdoors when time allows, or swimming in the Kendal pool when I’m pressed for time. On weekends, I love cooking and entertaining—it’s a great way to unwind and connect with people.”

A Career Rooted in Purpose

Bush’s path to senior living leadership began in the world of accounting. While her expertise in finances remains central to her work, she has always been drawn to organizations with a strong mission.
“If I weren’t in senior living, I would still do something in accounting for a nonprofit,” she said. “I admire the passion and commitment people bring when they believe in the mission of an organization. I could see myself working with a group focused on providing food or nutritional education for those in need.”

This desire to make a difference is evident in her approach to leadership. As CFO, Bush has always prioritized the well-being of residents and staff, ensuring that decisions are not driven solely by financial considerations.
“Even in my role as CFO, I try to look at the impact on staff and residents before making a decision,” she explained. “It’s not just about the money—it’s about the people.”

Lessons from Residents

Working closely with Kendal’s residents has given Bush a unique perspective on life and aging. She often draws inspiration from their wisdom and life experiences.
“It’s so important to remain active, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and plan for retirement,” she said. These lessons, shared by Kendal residents, have influenced not only her professional decisions but also her personal approach to life.

Facing Challenges and Building a Vision

One of Kendal’s most pressing challenges is planning for growth. As the organization looks to the future, it must balance expanding its facilities and services while maintaining the high standards residents expect.
“The biggest challenge continues to be when and how we grow—whether that’s adding residential apartments or cottages or expanding the services we offer,” Bush said.

Despite these challenges, Bush has a clear vision for Kendal’s future. She is particularly passionate about enhancing the organization’s expertise in dementia care.
“I would love for Kendal at Lexington to be a premier leader in dementia care—not just in Rockbridge County, but throughout the Valley,” she said.

A Leadership Style Grounded in Knowledge

Bush’s background in finance has been a critical asset in her interim CEO role. Her deep understanding of the organization’s finances, contracts, and operations has allowed her to hit the ground running.
“Having that financial foundation has made the learning curve a bit easier,” she said. “It’s helped me make informed decisions that balance fiscal responsibility with the needs of our community.”

Inspiration and Advice

For Bush, leadership is about constant learning and finding inspiration in unexpected places. She recently recommended a particularly moving episode of “The Moth” podcast, featuring Hector Black’s story on forgiveness.
“It’s an incredible true story that offers powerful insights into life and relationships,” she said. “I think everyone could benefit from hearing it.”

When asked what advice she would give to those aspiring to leadership in senior living, her answer was simple yet profound:
“Work hard and give it your all. The personal satisfaction and what you learn from the people you serve is amazing.”

A Legacy of Leadership

Felicia Bush’s tenure as interim CEO at Kendal at Lexington reflects her deep commitment to the organization’s mission, residents, and staff. Her ability to navigate challenges with grace and her vision for the future ensure that Kendal remains a vibrant, caring, and forward-thinking community. As Kendal continues its journey, Bush’s leadership leaves a lasting impact, reminding all who cross her path of the power of purpose and the strength of community.
