Captured on the Blue Ridge Parkway

As part of Kendal at Lexington’s commitment to lifelong learning, KaLex is pleased to announce a three-part series titled “Stories from the Shenandoah Valley,” which will showcase fascinating tales of the region’s rich history and culture. The series, jointly presented by KaLex residents and historians Ed Dooley and Katharine Brown, promises an engaging exploration of the Shenandoah Valley’s past, offering attendees a glimpse into its vibrant heritage.

Kicking Off: “Whiskey Distilling in the Shenandoah Valley: Not a Moonshine Tale” – DONE

The inaugural event of the series is set to commence on Aug. 9 at 4 p.m. in Kendal Hall. Katharine will enlighten the audience about the Shenandoah Valley’s once-thriving whiskey industry. Attendees will learn about the history of the region, revealing the significant role it played as the center of a legitimate whiskey industry between the colonial frontier settlement of the 1730s and the Civil War in the 1860s.

Katharine will also share exciting facts about whiskey distilling, shedding light on the notable local leaders involved in the trade, the challenges faced, and the impact on the local economy and institutions. To add a delightful touch, attendees will also have the opportunity to savor some fine old Virginia rye whiskey after the talk.

Up Next – Delving into the Roots: “Shenandoah Valley Pioneers: Their Ethnic and Religious Backgrounds”

On Sept. 6 at 4 p.m., the series will continue with Katharine Brown’s second talk, “Shenandoah Valley Pioneers: Their Ethnic and Religious Backgrounds.” Kendal Hall will once again host this enlightening session, where attendees will be taken on a journey through time to understand the diverse origins and religious affiliations of the Valley’s pioneers.

Grand Finale: The Journey of “American Trinity” through Time and Space

The series will culminate on Oct. 11 at 4 p.m. in Kendal Hall with Ed Dooley’s presentation of the film “American Trinity,” a video program initially produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Company in 1976 to commemorate the American Bicentennial. Rockbridge County was handpicked as the backdrop for this documentary, which featured interviews with three individuals whose familial ties stretched far into the annals of American history. In a fascinating twist, Ed, who served as the director of VMI’s museum then, played a pivotal role in the program’s creation in 1976. He will regale the audience with an enthralling account of the video’s journey through time and space, ultimately finding its way back to Lexington.

These events are co-sponsored by the Culture & Entertainment Committee and the Kendal Marketing team. Following each talk, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a wine reception.
