May 1, 2023 —Tammy Campbell began work at Kendal at Lexington on February 10, 2003 – 19 years ago! A member of the Environmental Support & Housekeeping team at the Borden Health Center, she is respected and valued by her peers and beloved by the residents.
Recognized for a Special Award
On June 15, 2022, Tammy was be presented with the “Power of Purpose” award at the Annual Awards Program of LeadingAge Virginia. Each year senior living communities from across the state submit nominations from their staff. Tammy and others from the staff team attended the ceremony in Roanoke to receive this special award.
An Unassuming Hero
Tammy Campbell is a very quiet, unassuming person whose devotion to her job is demonstrated every day. She often stops what she is doing to respond to a family member or resident. She will lead a resident by the hand if they are wandering, and she will pause to chat with and hug residents, seeing this as an important part of her daily duties.
“Tammy is cherished by her teammates because she is dependable, reliable, and consistent,” says Health Services Administrator Karen Jackson. Tammy’s approach to her work truly exemplifies “person-centered care” at its best! Her gentle spirit, sweet smile, and cheerfulness might camouflage the versatile, capable woman she is – not only does she excel at KaLex, but she is also an author of children’s stories!

Tammy’s viewpoint illustrates her special heart, “At Kendal we have happy times, sad times. Sometimes we struggle or disagree, but then we have that one big moment when things come together, and we are family. That’s what makes Kendal my second family!”
Tammy and staff like her are the heart of a Life Plan Community. Lovely grounds, beautiful facilities and residences, great food . . . all of these are important, but nothing can take the place of a team of caring, devoted professionals who make this their life’s work!
