June 15, 2023 —Community leaders get glimpse into the future of Life Plan Communities
Lexington, VA – Kendal at Lexington, a life-plan community in Virginia’s scenic Shenandoah Valley, is celebrating milestone progress, showcasing their commitment to person-centered care, and demonstrating how they are transforming the aging experience.
The industry-leading community is marking the half-way point on their $40M campus expansion and renovation program which, when complete, will bring the community:
- an additional 30 new independent living cottages on Sunrise Ridge
- expanded and updated living space in the Webster Assisted Living residences
- new “neighborhoods” in the Borden Health Center (Kendal’s skilled-nursing center will offer a more home-like environment and greatly expanded living space and amenities for residents)
- a strategic upgrade to the Anderson Community Dining venue
On Wednesday, August 7, Kendal at Lexington hosted a Hard Hat Tour for Kendal Leadership, business partners, and local politicians. The President of Kendal Corporation, Sean Kelly, and Board Chair, Bob Glidden, both spoke at the event.
“Kendal’s all together, and Kendal at Lexington in particular, have been in the business of providing person-centered-care to every person to come here since we first opened our doors. As time has gone by, our sector has continued to evolve. We now know that household-style environments allow for care to be delivered more authentically and more efficiently,” Kelly said. “We also know, through research, that physical environments matter, and those environments that promote socialization, those that harken back to ‘home,’ and those that provide for diverse programmatic experiences improve outcomes. So, ‘when we know better, we do better.’ Kendal at Lexington has always been of this mind, and today, we see the stepping stones to the culmination of years of hard work toward something better, with a vision that every person may come here not only to receive great care, but also to realize what is possible for themselves as they get older, far beyond what they might have imagined.”
Elected officials, local business, and non-profit leaders experienced Kendal’s hospitality first-hand as they toured the soon-to-be-completed Borden Health Center renovations and additions and heard directly from Executive Director Mina Tepper about new campus offerings and programming. This was followed by an opportunity to view the new Sunrise Ridge cottages.
Kendal at Lexington’s recent renovations and national CARF accreditations, which included special commendations for excellence in person-centered care and dementia-care specialty, have secured the campus’ position as a leading place to retire, experience life-long learning, and benefit from active and diverse community involvement.
“Kendal is demonstrating how exceptional resident quality of life can be. I am not surprised that we’ve been receiving high industry praise; it is phenomenal what this community has accomplished by thinking big and working together for the common good,” Board Chair Bob Glidden said.

In fact, the new Sunrise Ridge Cottages, which will begin welcoming new residents later this fall, have already sold out. Kendal at Lexington keeps a waiting list for parties interested in the community.
