Connecting
with the Community
Many residents and staff
spend time away from Kendal volunteering at a variety of other
not-for-profit organizations in the Lexington-Rockbridge County
community as well as having those groups provide volunteer hours
at Kendal.
Kendal residents who were former faculty
at one of the local colleges can be seen tutoring current students.
Many residents also go into the public schools to read to elementary
school children.
Residents also volunteer with groups
such as Habitat for Humanity, Stonewall Jackson Hospital, Virginia
Horse Center and many more.
Students from VMI, W&L
and Southern Virginia University visit with residents and perform
a variety of different community service projects on the Kendal
campus. Professors from these local colleges provide lectures
and concerts. Washington and Lee University also allows our residents
to audit college classes with the permission of the professor.
Staff are encouraged
to become involved in the greater community and share their time
and talent with organizations such as the American Cancer Society,
Dabney S. Lancaster Community College, Sunrise Rotary, Girl Scouts,
United Way and many others.
