A Culture of Giving

Kendal at Lexington owes its very existence to the vision and generous giving of its founders—the vision, commitment and generosity of its founding board and residents, and the benefactor who graciously gifted the 85 acres of land on which Kendal at Lexington now sits. More than a decade ago these individuals envisioned a community that would appeal to and serve Lexington retirees who were finding it necessary to leave the area for retirement living. When Kendal was a dream and a concept, visionary men and women gave more than $1,000,000 as start up funding to pursue that dream. Through their dedication and hard work, Kendal at Lexington was created.

Within a year of Kendal’s opening, Stonewall Jackson Hospital decided to discontinue its long term care program. Kendal responded by developing a plan to “move” the nursing home to the Kendal campus, ensuring that the needs of the wider local community would continue to be met, including those who could not afford the full cost of care, while also providing care to Kendal’s own residents. The Borden Center now provides care and services to residents of the wider community as well as Kendal at Lexington.

Most recently, Sunnyside House, the historic home donated to Kendal and located on the Kendal property, has been restored and is now enjoying its third century of hospitality thanks to generous donations large and small. The elegant furnishings for Sunnyside are the gifts of residents. In addition, generous gifts have funded new staff positions, refurbished a grand piano and provided the resistance pool in the Benjamin Borden Health Center. Kendal at Lexington owes its existence to generous giving.

Kendal Responds to Increased Demand for Quality Retirement Living
Kendal at Lexington began as a small scale community, serving less than 130 individuals in 70 cottages and apartments, and 24 assisted living suites. Interest in Kendal has grown since opening in July of 2000 and the waiting list has grown. With increased demand, the board and staff, with the input of residents, decided to increase the number of residences which would then make possible the addition of a wellness center, gathering room, and expanded dining venues. With the current expansion nearly complete, there are new opportunities for board, current and future residents, and staff to support Kendal's mission and fund raising efforts are continuing.
