1. What is Kendal at Lexington?

Kendal at Lexington is a full-service lifecare Continuing Care Retirement Community located in Lexington, Virginia. Meeting the active lifestyle of today's older adults, Kendal features apartment residences, cottage homes, a community center, fitness center with indoor pool, assisted living residences, and a state-of-the-art health center.

2. Who owns and manages Kendal at Lexington?

Lexington Retirement Community, Inc. (d/b/a Kendal at Lexington) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation organized in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The volunteer Board of Directors represents a cross section of business, professional, civic and denominational leaders. Experienced staff provide the professional leadership and expertise to manage Kendal at Lexington.  Kendal at Lexington is an affiliate of The Kendal Corporation.

3. What are the greatest benefits of living at Kendal at Lexington?

The greatest benefits to the residents are Lifestyle and the Promise of Continuing Care.

The Continuing Care benefit assures the availability of quality, supportive care in an attractive, professionally staffed environment for assisted living and nursing care. Accommodations are on-site. Secondly, residents benefit from the lifestyle offered at Kendal at Lexington which includes social, recreational, educational, cultural, spiritual, and fitness programming.

4. What type of residences does Kendal at Lexington offer?

Kendal at Lexington features apartment and cottage homes ranging from 550 sq. ft. to 2000 sq. ft.  The apartments are situated in two three-story buildings, with most offering patios or balconies.  The cottages are arranged as singles and in clusters of two, three or four residences.

5. May I furnish and decorate my apartment or cottage as I wish?

Of course! We encourage you to decorate your home any way you wish.

6. What types of fees are paid by the residents at Kendal?

Residents pay a one-time entrance fee when they move into the community and a monthly fee, both of which vary according to the size and type of residence. A portion of both may be tax deductible as a medical expense.

7. What services are included in the Monthly Fee?

The monthly fee entitles you to the use of your residence, common areas and amenities within the community, and covers the following:

  • Flexible dining plan
  • All utilities except telephone and internet access
  • Maintenance of individual accommodations
  • Maintenance of all community buildings and grounds
  • Routine housekeeping every other week
  • Heavy housekeeping twice a year
  • Area pickup of trash and recycling
  • Scheduled local transportation
  • Use of all common facilities, including fitness center
  • Open parking
  • 24-hour emergency staff response
  • Real estate taxes and insurance
  • Residents Association to coordinate social, recreational, cultural and spiritual activities of the community

8. Who determines when or if a Resident will move to a level of health care? What hospitals are in the area?

The decision to transfer a resident to a level of health care will be made by the Resident Care Committee in consultation with the resident, the resident's family and/or representative, and the resident's physician. Emergency medical treatment is provided at Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital, which is less than 2 miles from Kendal. The University of Virginia Medical Center, Augusta Medical Center and Roanoke Memorial Hospital are less than one hour from Lexington.

9. Is the monthly fee subject to change?

The monthly fee varies according to the size of the residence and may be adjusted based on cost of operations. Residents will be informed in writing at least 30 days prior to adjustments. Adjustments in fees will be based on the projected cost of operations (i.e. labor costs, supplies, food, utilities, medically associated expenses, etc.). Kendal will attempt to maintain costs as low as possible but within sound financial practices.

10. How do I become a resident?

In order to make your reservation to become a Resident you simply:

  • Schedule a visit with our Marketing staff
  • Choose your preferred residence and make a deposit
  • Submit a brief application which reviews some general health and financial information
  • When the residence becomes available, you will schedule your move and payment of the balance of the Entrance Fee

11. Do you allow pets?

Yes!  Pets are welcome at Kendal.  While we can't allow large animals like horses, we haven't established a size limit. The expectation that pets be on a leash, well-behaved and cleaned up after has ensured a good experience for all.

Kendal at Lexington considers and admits residents without regard to race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, or any other characteristic protected by law.
